Refreshing Your Assignments for the Age of AI

Spring 2026 Short Course

Generative AI is transforming higher education in real-time, raising concerns about academic integrity, student learning, and the ethical use of this technology.

Despite these threats, this disruption presents a critical opportunity to refresh student assignments, ensuring they remain equitable, accessible, inclusive, and aligned to course objectives.

In this practical short course, you will apply a design thinking framework to collaboratively examine and update one of your current assignments. You will investigate the assignment’s core challenges, brainstorm creative solutions, and develop a working draft of your new design. You will work in small groups to provide and receive feedback on revised assignments before collaborating on implementation planning.

At the end of this three-week short course, you will have a plan for a revised assignment that is AI-aware and pedagogically sound. You will also be able to apply the same design thinking framework to other assignments.

Short Course Objectives

After participating in this short course, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate existing assignments for vulnerabilities and opportunities related to generative AI.
  • Revise assignments to measure authentic student learning and promote academic integrity in an AI-saturated environment.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to share and refine effective teaching and course design practices for an AI-saturated environment.
