Teaching Through Relationships

Fall 2025 Short Course

Positive relationships between instructors and students are central to optimal learning.

Yet, cultivating these relationships can be challenging alongside the demands of content delivery. In this short course led by So Jung Lee and Lori Mumpower, participants explore the full arc of relationship development in the classroom, from initial contact to sustained connection. Through guided reflection and peer dialogue, instructors will assess their current relational practices and develop actionable plans to enhance relationship-centered teaching.

Participants will:

  • Examine how relationship-rich classrooms influence student learning and outcomes;
  • Identify key elements that shape relationships in classrooms;
  • Reflect on their own relationship-building practices; and,
  • Develop and receive feedback on an action plan for implementing relationship-centered teaching strategies into their courses.
