Tired of watching students disengage mid-lecture? Do you want to foster deeper learning and student engagement without overhauling your entire course? Come learn about the practice of dynamic or active lecturing, a technique that embeds small moments of active learning within the traditional lecture. In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the principles of active lecturing, discover small tweaks they can make to their existing lectures to increase engagement and deepen learning, and leave with actionable strategies to apply in their classrooms—regardless of discipline or class size.
After participating in this workshop, you will be able to:
- Define active or dynamic lecturing and distinguish it from traditional lecture formats
- Identify the benefits of active lecturing for student engagement and learning outcomes
- Select active lecturing strategies that fit your teaching context
EVENT FORMAT: This workshop will be held on-campus, in-person in room 201 in the Teaching Excellence Building (TEB) located on 924 S. Morgan Street.
EVENT LEAD: Katie Pierson, piersonk@uic.edu
EVENT CO-FACILITATOR: Lori Mumpower, mumpower@uic.edu
Inclusion and Accessibility Information: CATE is committed to making events accessible. CATE’s in-person events typically involve a combination of presentation and discussion-based activities.
