Overview
Are you one of a few people like you in your department, college, or discipline? Feeling invisible or pushed to the margins? Not sure how to make room for yourself (much less support other students while doing so)? You are not alone. In this workshop, we'll use Susie Wise’s Design for Belonging framework to dream and make actionable plans for fostering our own belonging in the classes we support. Whether you have complete freedom to design your own course or a narrower scope of interaction with students, you can bring your authentic self to your teaching assistantship.
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Identify core aspects of your authentic self that you want to bring to your teaching.
- Describe how to use Susie Wise's levers of belonging to create moments of belonging.
- Design at least one practice for fostering your belonging in your teaching assistantship.
WORKSHOP FORMAT: This workshop will be held in Lincoln Hall room 304 (707 S. Morgan Street)
WORKSHOP FACILITATOR: April Andry Rah'man, aandry1@uic.edu
