Do you ever wonder why students don’t seem to retain knowledge or skills from one course to the next? Do you find yourself having to re-teach things they should already know? That’s because teaching for transfer requires more than covering content and assessing learning. Teaching for transfer involves intentionally helping students connect ideas across courses and experiences as well as providing opportunities to practice applying their knowledge to new tasks or contexts. In this interactive workshop, you will explore evidence-based strategies that facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills between contexts. You will leave with practical techniques you can implement immediately in your own courses.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify possible barriers to the transfer of knowledge and skills between contexts.
- Develop instructional strategies that promote near and far transfer.
- Incorporate activities and assessments that facilitate transfer by helping students recognize underlying principles across contexts.
