Terms of Employment: The position is for 20 hours per week effective May 16, 2022, to August 15, 2022, with potential for renewal on a semester-by-semester basis through graduation of the employee.

About Us:

A central goal of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence (CATE) is to empower faculty to design and deliver effective and inclusive technology-enhanced education. CATE provides a number of services including professional development, curriculum development, instructional technology support, and course design services. In addition, we offer individual and group consultations on instructional design principles and the integration of technology into teaching.

CATE seeks applicants for the position of Graduate Student Teaching Assistant (TA) who are looking for an opportunity to work in a dynamic, project-based environment. CATE Multimedia TAs gain experience in multimedia production such as graphic design and video editing and hone their technical skills using media streaming and creation software.  TAs interact with instructors across the university, providing invaluable teaching support with UIC’s learning management system, Blackboard, while improving their communication skills through customer service with diverse stakeholders. TAs also create documentation that will be used campus-wide and have an overall positive impact on student success.

Position:
The teaching assistant (TA) appointment will begin May 16, 2022. This 50% time position (20 hours/week) includes a tuition waiver. The graduate student TA will report directly to the Multimedia Services Lead and provide multimedia support as follows:

  • Greet instructors and assist in the reception area; answer phones as needed.
  • Process equipment checkouts/returns utilizing the WebCheckout system.
  • Ensure all equipment in the checkout pool is in working order and all items are accounted for during checkout and return processes.
  • Provide training to students, instructors, and staff on the use of the multimedia equipment available for checkout.
  • Provide training to students, instructors, and staff on the use of the installed multimedia software provided on the Lab workstations and Multimedia laptops available for checkout.
  • Monitor and respond to the Multimedia Services queue in TDX (ticketing system).
  • Assist instructors with media conversion/duplication.
  • Create multimedia assets for the Instructional Design team and other members of the CATE educational development team.
  • Assist with the creation, coordination, and dissemination of documentation related to instructional technologies, including, but not limited to: Blackboard Learn, Panopto, iClickers, Echo360, and other 3rd party tools.
  • Assist in the creation of instructor and student tutorials of new instructional technologies.
  • Assist in designing, promoting, scheduling, and delivering training seminars and webinars that support face-to-face, online, blended, and hybrid classrooms. Seminars include the use of content management systems, lecture capture, discussion boards, and other online collaboration tools.
  • Facilitate recordings in the Lightboard studio as needed.
  • Assist with Event Support for departments or programs outside CATE as needed (e.g., video recording of seminar or meeting).
  • Assist with video editing, graphic creation, and animation for CATE programs and various course-related and Event Support projects.
  • Perform other related duties and assist the CATE team in special projects as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must be full-time, degree-seeking students in a UIC Master’s or Ph.D. program (BVIS, Graphic Design, Marketing, or other related field preferred) in good academic standing.

 

Must have skills:

  • Ability to work on-campus.
  • Punctuality, reliability, and consistency.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as Adobe Acrobat.
  • In-depth knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro), Adobe Captivate, and Camtasia Studio.
  • Experience in multimedia production (such as graphics, audio, and video).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, work independently, and to conduct oneself in a highly professional and ethical manner.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse team.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to prioritize, schedule, and meet deadlines.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to track and manage complex and multiple projects
  • Demonstrated public speaking skills
