You can find many wellness resources in Blackboard under the left navigation menu by clicking on the Assist button, right below My Grades. Explore resources like the Care Facts, Pop-Up Pantry, and others. It’s no secret that there is an unprecedented mental health crisis in the U.S. However, there is something we can do it about it. According to the National Library of Medicine, the average time between the onset of a mental disorder and receiving first treatment is more than 10 years. That’s why early intervention and prevention programs help close that gap so people can get the timely support that they need and deserve.
Many college students experience mental health distress or illness while away from family support. The rigors of their studies, navigating autonomous self-care, and life changes may be contributing factors. First symptoms of some genetic mental health disorders also typically appear for the first time in this age group. The University of Illinois Chicago offers students many types of services and resources, from self-help guides to individual treatment. Dean of Students staff members are able to guide students, parents, spouses, faculty and staff to a number of supportive options. Contacting the Dean of Students office offers an opportunity to connect students with necessary services and support.
