About
Dr. Elizabeth Friedman is Facilitator for Faculty Engagement in STEM Initiatives for the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence (CATE). She is passionate about student success and an expert in professional development. Prior to joining CATE, Dr. Friedman served as the Director of Professional Master’s Programs and Strategic Initiatives at Illinois Tech where she implemented best practices for STEM graduate student programs. She is an active member, co-founder, and former president of the National Professional Science Master’s Association (NPSMA).
Dr. Friedman earned her Ph.D. and MA in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago and her BA in Anthropology from the University of Virginia. Her dissertation research focused on the relationship between ancient ceramic and metal technology in the third millennium BC middle east where she spent several seasons excavating archaeological sites. Dr. Friedman has over a decade of experience in the social sciences teaching cultural and environmental anthropology, and more recently a very popular course on the history of immigration and innovation in the city of Chicago.
In her free time, Dr. Friedman enjoys exploring Chicago’s parks and neighborhoods, hiking, reading historical fiction, and jigsaw puzzles for unwinding. Most of her spare time, however, is spent training in and teaching Korean and Filipino martial arts.
