Overview

During this in-person experiential session led by faculty from the College of Business Administration Professional Development Program, participants will learn about the tenets of improv theatre and the research-backed reasons why using improv exercises can increase belonging and participation in classrooms of all disciplines. Participants will engage in activities designed to enhance active listening skills, build trust and team collaboration, and mindfulness which they can use in their own courses. Deepen your pedagogy with exercises inspired by Viola Spolin that will increase spontaneity and enhance inclusive communication. Come play with us!

After participating in this on campus workshop, you will be able to:

  • Identify three improv strategies to increase active listening and participation from students and build an ensemble mindset
  • Read your “classroom” to determine high and low presence communication styles
  • Increase spontaneity and reduce hierarchy in the classroom

WORKSHOP FORMAT: This workshop will be held on-campus, in-person in room 201 in the Teaching Excellence Building (TEB) located on 924 S. Morgan Street.

EVENT LEAD: Katie Pierson, piersonk@uic.edu
