As an instructor, how do you know if what you’re doing in the classroom is working? In other words, how do you know if your teaching methods are effective in helping support students in achieving your course learning objectives? If you have questions, the Instructional Designers at the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence (CATE) can help.

 

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO WORK WITH AN INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER?

Instructional design focuses on the needs of the student and creates a positive learning experience, which contributes to the achievement of their learning goals. Instructional designers can help ensure students learn efficiently with high quality learning materials and activities that take into account the varying backgrounds of all students.

If you are a UIC instructor — including faculty, lecturers, graduate students or postdocs serving as primary instructors for UIC courses, or adjunct professors who teach and/or support teaching development for undergraduate, graduate or professional student courses — CATE Instructional Designers are available to assist you with all your needs including:

  • Design instructional materials and courses
  • Research and adopt instructional strategies to Improve student learning in your course
  • Leverage technology to enhance and improve accessibility to the learning activities in your class
  • Implement effective teaching strategies for synchronous or asynchronous online courses
  • Troubleshoot and address instructional challenges

CATE instructional designers have the experience to help you identify opportunities to improve the skills and academic performance outcomes of your students using evidence-based pedagogical research and promising instructional practices from the field. We help to create learning experiences that are student-centered, with accessibility, equity, and inclusion in mind.
