Somewhere along the course of your career, you may have heard about metacognition: the value of being aware about the ways in which you think. As an instructor, you may already assign projects or work that encourages your students to reflect metacognitively. Acknowledging the key part that metacognition plays for learning and growth, how can your feedback to students (written, video, or audio) help both you and your students think about your students’ learning process in the course? During this workshop, participants will learn about the value of encouraging metacognition in students through their preferred feedback style, explore strategies and strengths of various feedback practices, and reflect on how their feedback impacts student learning.
After participating in this workshop, you will be able to:
- Discuss the benefits of metacognition through feedback practices
- Identify multiple strategies for giving metacognitive feedback
- Apply intentional language to your feedback practices
EVENT FORMAT: This workshop will be held on-campus, in-person in room 201 in the Teaching Excellence Building (TEB) located on 924 S. Morgan Street.

Inclusion and Accessibility Information: CATE is committed to making events accessible. CATE’s in-person events typically involve a combination of presentation and discussion-based activities. We welcome ASL interpreters, note-takers, and accompanying assistants to in-person CATE events. The TEB is wheelchair accessible with an elevator to the second floor space. The TEB space is equipped with fixed-height tables that are moveable and can be reconfigured. There are single-occupancy, all-gender, accessible bathrooms on the second and basement levels of TEB.
