Overview

As all instructors come to understand, life doesn’t operate around neat semesterly schedules, no matter how much effort went into course planning. The transition to college itself can be a disruptive process, sometimes exacerbating issues from learners’ prior experiences as shaped by socioeconomic factors, race, gender identity and sexuality, disability status, and other variables. This session will be broken into two parts. In the first section, we will familiarize ourselves with the university resources that are available to teaching assistants and students for when greater student support and/or accommodations might be beneficial. Following that, we will work through anonymized case studies derived from real student encounters and attempt to develop a plan to help the described students.

EVENT FORMAT: This workshop will be online on Zoom.

EVENT FACILITATOR: Jay Yencich, PhD Candidate, English / Creative Writing, jyenci2@uic.edu
