About

Dr. Patrick Horton is the Associate Director for Instructional Innovation at UIC’s Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence (CATE). He is an experienced educator, instructional designer, and program coordinator who collaborates with instructors and campus partners to support the development of accessible, engaging, and innovative learning experiences. Patrick also supports UIC’s Extended Campus and the online initiative.

Patrick has a diverse background in education, driven by a passion for using technology to reduce barriers to learning. Before joining CATE in 2025, Patrick was an instructional designer with UIC’s Instructional Design and Media Production Studio and taught music and technology courses at the secondary and university levels. With undergraduate and graduate degrees in music education, Patrick earned a Ph.D. at Northwestern University, where he studied creativity and technology in music teaching and learning. Patrick is also a Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) with the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP). His expertise spans music education, digital accessibility, edtech integration, learning design for creativity, and educational innovation.

Patrick enjoys playing guitar and using Chicago’s public transit to explore the city’s delicious restaurants, beautiful lakefront, and engaging cultural offerings.
