Fostering a Growth Mindset in Students

Spring 2025 Short Course

What are the factors that hold back or push students forward in their learning? How do students react to successes and failures? How can instructors leverage their role in the classroom to increase students’ motivation and persistence? “Fostering a Growth Mindset in Students” will offer instructors an in-depth workshop series on the social and cognitive origins of students’ mindsets relating to one’s knowledge, skills, and abilities, and teaching strategies to foster a growth mindset among students.

In this short course, instructors will differentiate between a fixed and growth mindset, examine the impact of mindsets on students’ learning experiences and responses to challenges and setbacks, and explore how both students’ and instructors’ mindsets can impact student motivation, academic achievement, and sense of belonging. Instructors will also identify teaching strategies they can use to foster a growth mindset in their course, and develop and receive feedback on a plan for implementing one of these strategies in their course. Short course participants will meet for interactive, in-person workshops once a week for three consecutive weeks during the Spring semester beginning the week of March 31.

Enroll by March 14, 2025 to be included as a participant. Those enrolled in the short course will receive calendar invitations for the 3 meetings by March 21. The short course will begin the week of March 31, running once a week for three consecutive weeks.
