the 2024-2025 Action Research Scholars: Gonzalo Bello, Tara Driscoll, Rita Hatfield, Ling He, Jamie Szwalek and Laura Thorp

Congratulations to our new cohort of UIC instructors who have been accepted into CATE’s Janet Riddle Action Research Scholars program!

Meet the Action Research Scholars: Gonzalo Bello (Computer Science), Tara Driscoll (Pharmacy Practice), Rita Hatfield (Chemistry), Ling He (English), Jamie Szwalek (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering), and Laura Thorp (Physical Therapy).

The goal of the Action Research Scholars program is to empower UIC instructors to engage in data-informed, reflective teaching practices. Scholars will ask “How do I know I’m effective in my teaching?” by using a variety of approaches to investigate the various impacts of their teaching practices on their students’ learning experiences. This is a year-long professional learning program where scholars will spend the first semester participating in workshops to develop a research project, including completing human subjects research training and obtaining IRB approval, and the second semester on data collection and analysis.

Read about what the alumni of the program have accomplished in their projects! Over 9,000 students have been impacted by the scholars’ teaching innovations and projects. In addition to developing skills for conducting education research, scholars have worked with undergraduate students as research partners, become involved in projects and grants in their departments, and have disseminated their research in publications and at local, national, and international conferences.
