New Course for Graduate Teaching Assistants

TAs perform many tasks and learn many new skills.

GC 591: Introduction to College-Level Teaching for Graduate Teaching Assistants is a new course being offered this fall, by the Graduate College and the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence. This course is designed for graduate teaching assistants (TAs) and instructors to support their teaching at UIC. Whether a first time TA or returning after a few semesters, this course will empower graduate students to teach with confidence, skill, and success.

This 2-credit course will meet in-person during Fall 2024 on Wednesdays from 4-6pm. To register, search for CRN: 49519.

During the course, graduate TAs will:

  • Learn about student-centered, evidence-based teaching strategies and how to apply them immediately in the classroom.
  • Discuss how to navigate classroom scenarios and troubleshoot just-in-time teaching challenges.
  • Reflect on their own teaching practices and identify areas of strength and growth.
  • Build community support and share their own teaching success with other grad TAs also invested in teaching and learning.

This course can count towards CIRTL at UIC associate certification, a nationally-recognized certification that endorses and highlights your accomplishments and commitment to implementing effective and inclusive teaching practices.
